Bi-rich tennantites from Jáchymov (Czech Republic)

Abstract

Six samples of minerals of the tetrahedrite group from the Jáchymov ore district, Krušné hory Mountains (Czech Republic) were studied by EPMA. The significant variable contents of As, Sb and Bi in trigonal pyramidal position of the crystal structure are characteristic for the studied samples. The sample from the mine Rovnost (Geister vein) is the most interesting. Beside prevailing Bi-rich tennantite and rare Bi-rich tetrahedrite, the zones and aggregates up to 50 μm in size with a probable new Bi-dominant member of tetrahedrite group were observed. The determined Bi contents in the range 1.57 - 1.89 apfu prevails over the As (1.38 - 1.72 apfu) and Sb (0.25 - 0.77 apfu) ones. The minimum size of found aggregates and complicated intergrowths with Bi-rich tetrahedrite unfortunately do not allow to obtain the necessary structural data for full characterization of the new mineral species.
